A FREE SPRING NATURE WALK ACTIVITY
After the stillness of winter, the natural world begins to stir: green shoots push through the soil, buds swell on bare branches and insects start to reappear. For children especially, spring is the perfect time to notice the yearly cycle of growth and return.
Spending time outdoors at this time of year - whether on a family walk through the village, along a local trail or in your own garden - is precious time to slow down and experience the changes together. Noticing blossom, listening for birdsong or spotting the first bumblebees are small moments that settle into a child’s memory, shaping how they come to notice and value the natural world, quietly building familiarity and care as they grow.
We’ve created this simple activity to accompany family spring walks in and around Lowdham with young children with plenty of things to spot that are commonly found around the village in the spring.
The first page is a checklist for little nature spotters to tick off some things they might see, based on suggestions from villagers, the second page a sit down drawing activity with a small guided discussion focusing on the senses to prompt a chat together about the sights and smells and sounds of spring and how this made them feel (you can write this bit for them if they're not ready to write yet). The third page is a writing practice activity with a mix of shorter and longer words to trace, and the fourth page a colouring in sheet. You can mix and match the pages depending on their age and what they're happy to try.
This activity was created for Woodland SOS, The Lowdham Project (based in Lowdham Library) in collaboration with Redavons, the Lowdham-based group raising awareness of land stewardship, wildlife, and the role we all play in caring for the natural world.
Redavons Ranger Charlie explains their mission and ethos:
'Redavons is a family business, undertaking land management from a garden plot to multi acre woodlands.
In our 'spare' time, we manage our own woodlands always with the intention of working with the land to improve the species mix and enrich the habitat through sensitive intervention.
In fact, the business grew from a hobby and now we try to show customers what we see and how their land can become a haven for wildlife.
Having worked with Nature for the last forty years we are more aware than most of the dangers we are facing and we know that if we are to turn the tide, it will be the ordinary folk who make the difference.
We don't believe that organisations and committees have been effective and don't agree that Nature should be consigned to reserves. The Natural World should be a part of everybody's everyday.
So Woodland SOS was born. To help people to understand to show them what they can do to make a real change for the future, to go to the children, to talk to the elders, to convince them that they are the ones who hold the power, to use our experience our knowledge and our land to encourage everyone to lend a hand to Mother Nature.'
