A traditional Christmas market that captures the spirit of a medieval Yuletide

Mercatum is a medieval word from the Middle Ages that translates to 'market', or 'marketplace', derived from the Latin mercatus, meaning "to trade" or "a place where business is transacted". During the medieval period, official documents, such as royal charters granting the right to hold a market, frequently used the term mercatum, and the modern English word "market" is directly derived from this Latin term.

Christmas Mercatum at Haddon Hall

The Mercatum Christmas Artisan Market at Haddon Hall near Bakewell in Derbyshire - one of England's most complete and well-preserved medieval manor houses - has become one of the Peak District’s most popular festive events.

Haddon Hall itself is breathtaking of course, but at Christmas it becomes something even more enchanting, drawing visitors from far and wide who appreciate thoughtful craftsmanship, historic surroundings, and a gentler more civilised kind of seasonal atmosphere.

Market stalls weave through the grounds, threading in and out of medieval rooms and courtyards tastefully decorated with traditional greenery and twinkling lights, with high-quality artisan makers and independent craftspeople offering unique pieces made with genuine care: ceramics, textiles, fine art, prints, natural beauty products, jewellery, chocolates, candles, preserves, and other festive treats.

Tips for Visiting

To make the most of the experience, a few simple preparations can help:

  • Book tickets early, as they often sell out quickly: https://www.haddonhall.co.uk/events/

  • Arrive before your entry time if driving, as the car park can get very busy, particularly at weekends.

  • Wear warm layers, especially as some sections are outdoors.

  • Bring a bag if you plan on purchasing gifts; many items are handmade and delicate.

  • Take your time — the market is best enjoyed slowly, allowing space to appreciate both the craftsmanship and the historic surroundings.

  • Expect crowds, especially at weekends and in the smaller rooms and corridors.

  • Check accessibility before you decide to go. Pushchairs are not permitted, and due Haddon Hall's age and it's location at the top of a steep hill with many steps and uneven stone floors, those with mobility needs should check the venue Accessibility Statement before booking: https://www.haddonhall.co.uk/accessibility-statement/
